PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its weekly awards for men’s basketball, and Penn freshman Tyler Bernardini has been named the Rookie of the Week.
This marks the fifth time Bernardini has been named Rookie of the Week this season, and the ninth time overall a Penn player has been so honored in 2007-08. Teammates Jack Eggleston and Harrison Gaines have each won the honor twice.
Bernardini received rookie honors after another spectacular weekend, capped off in grand style when he hit the game-winning shot against Columbia with just 0.6 seconds left on Saturday night at the Palestra. With the win, Penn clinched at least a share of third place in the Ivy League. Bernardini finished the Columbia game with 15 points -- 11 in the second half -- and also filled the box score with two rebounds, four assists and three steals in 36 minutes.
That came on the heels of his performance against Ivy champion Cornell, when he led all scorers with 25 points and also collected two boards, two assists and two steals. In that game with the Big Red, Bernardini knocked down a career-best five three-point shots, including two in the final 18 seconds when Penn cut a 10-point Cornell lead to just two and got Bernardini a chance at a game-winning shot.
Penn closes out the 2007-08 season Tuesday night, traveling to Princeton to meet the Tigers at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
