Bethea Takes Third at Southeast Open as Wrestling Opens Season

ROANOKE, Va. – May Bethea had the best day for the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team in its season opening tournament, finishing third at 157 pounds at the Southeast Open.

Ranked No. 16 in the country, Bethea was 4-1 in his first action of 2016-17, his only loss coming to No. 15 Russell Parsons of Army West Point in the semifinals. Bethea would rally to defeat Princeton’s Mike D’Angelo, 9-7, for third. Bethea trailed, 2-1, after the first period, but scored four takedowns in the final two frames for the win.

No. 17 Frank Mattiace finished in sixth place, also posting a 4-1 record. Mattiace would post a major decision and a fall on the day, his lone loss a 6-3 decision in the quarterfinals to Old Dominion’s No. 14 Kevin Beazley. At 174 pounds, Dan McDevitt returned after a year out of the lineup to go 3-1 and finish in fourth place.

In the Freshmen/Sophomore Division, a pair of rookies posted impressive performances to open their Penn careers. At 197 pounds, Jalen Laughlin finished in third place after a dominant 17-1 technical fall in the medal match. At 149 pounds, Jon Errico went 4-2 to claim sixth place.
