Ivy League Release
PHILADELPHIA - If they hadn't been before, the rest of the Ivy League is now on notice. For the second time to open the 2012 season, Penn's freshman setter Ronnie Bither has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
This past weekend at the Molten Classic, held in Berkeley at the University of California, Bither showed no signs of slowing down after her fantastic opening weekend at the Big 5 Tournament. The Bay Area native, playing within miles of home, registered two double-doubles and once again averaged nearly 10 assists per set to spur the Quaker attack.
In Friday night's opener facing a perennial Top 25 program in Cal, Bither dished out 28 assists and had six digs. She followed that with a pair of double-doubles on Saturday, handing out 34 assists in each match, while playing solid back row defense with 12 digs against Northern Arizona and another 13 in a sweep over UC-Riverside.She also helped at the net with three block assists and wisely picked her spots to attack, earning seven kills on the weekend with a hitting percentage of .318.
Bither and the rest of the Quakers play their final regular-season tournament of the year this weekend, hosting the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational on Friday and Saturday at The Palestra. Penn will face George Mason on Friday night at 7 p.m., Radford on Saturday morning beginning at 11 a.m., and close out the tournament against Rutgers at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening.
