PHILADELPHIA – Penn gymnastics has yet again dominated the weekly ECAC awards, earning two for the week of Jan. 27. Dana Bonincontri was named Co-Gymnast of the Week along with Jean Alban from Temple. Elyse Shenberger was named Co-Rookie of the Week along with Corey Holman of Brown.
For Bonincontri, this is her second such award in 2013 – she was this season’s first Gymnast of the Week following Jan. 14. In addition to her two accolades, she just missed out on a third, scoring a 39.125 in the all-around against Rutgers in Penn’s second meet.
Against Yale, the senior led the Quakers in a resounding dual meet victory by winning three of the four events – vault, beam, and bars – in addition to the all-around. She tied her career-high on beam with a 9.800, scored the same on vault, and tied teammate Kirsten Strausbaugh with a 9.700 on bars. Her final all-around score for the day was a 38.850, giving the ECAC good reason to rank her as its top Division I gymnast on vault, bars, and the all-around.
Shenberger displayed the talent that drew Penn to recruit her against Yale, as she placed third on beam with a 9.675, and scored career-highs on both vault (9.600) and floor (9.525). The freshman has competed in every meet this season, participating in three of the four events in each.
Bonincontri and Shenberger’s contributions led Penn to its first dual victory of the season on Jan. 27, as the Quakers defeated Yale 191.525-187.900. The Red and Blue will be back on the mat on Feb. 1 when they travel to Muncie, Ind. for a 7 p.m. dual meet against Ball State.
