RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior all-around gymnasts Dana Bonincontri and Kirsten Strausbaugh each posted career high scores in the all-around at the NCAA Regional hosted by North Carolina State. Despite the personal bests, it still was not quite good enough to make the cut for NCAA's in the extremely competitive field.
Bonincontri scored 39.150, missing the NCAA cut by just over a tenth of a point, finishing third among eligible all-around gymnasts. Strausbaugh tied her career high all-around, scoring 38.900. She finished fifth amongst the remaining gymnasts competiting for the all-around. Bonincontri and Strausbaugh would have needed to place first or second in this group to qualify for the NCAA Championships. These two finished first and second out of the group of five gymnasts that were selected at-large to compete in the all-around.
For Bonincontri, who was making her second straight trip to regionals, she scored three 9.8's to go along with a 9.75. She started out her night on vault and posted a 9.8 in that event and followed that up with a second 9.8 on the uneven bars. Her vault was the second-best of her season, finishing just behind her program record-breaking vault at the ECAC Championships. Her uneven bars score made it three times in the last four meets that she has scored at least 9.8.
On the balance beam, she scored 9.75 and finished up her night on the floor with a third 9.8. Both her beam and her floor scores tied her second-best performances of the season. Her all-around score of 39.15 broke her career high that she scored last week by five-hundredths of a point.
Strausbaugh started her night on the beam. She got her positive momentum going with a 9.675 on the event, which was her second-highest beam score of the year. Moving over to her specialty, floor exercise, she posted her highest score of the evening, 9.8. This marked the fifth straight meet that she has achieved a 9.8 for the event and sixth in the last seven meets.
Moving back around to vault, Strausbaugh posted her second 9.675 of the night on this event. This score tied for her third-bestvault score this year. Finishing up on the uneven bars, Strausbaugh posted her second-best score of the evening, 9.75. Showing remarkable consistency, she has yet to score lower than 9.725 on this event in 2012. Her 38.9 in the all-around tied her career high that she set early in February in a home quad meet.
After just missing the trip to nationals, Bonincontri and Strausbaugh will get back into team competition this coming Thursday at the USAG Collegiate Nationals. Penn is the third seeded team in this meet and will look to cap off its record-breaking season with one more strong weekend of competition.
