PHILADELPHIA --The University of Pennsylvania has added Brandon Shald to its heavyweight rowing coaching staff as an assistant coach, Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Rowing Geoff Bond announced on Wednesday.
Shald, who rowed for Bond as a collegian at California, most recently served as an assistant coach with the Princeton heavies during the 2014-15 season. The Tigers won five Cup races during the 2014-15 season and were third at both Sprints and IRAs last season with Shald on the coaching staff.
During the 2013-14 season, Shald was an assistant with Princeton's lightweight program, winning two Cup races while posting a third-place row at Sprints and finishing fifth at IRAs.
In addition to his duties with Princeton's varsity programs, Shald was head coach at the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association from the spring of 2014 through the fall of 2015.
A 2010 graduate of Cal, Shald was a national champion for the Bears in 2007 -- winning the novice 8+ IRA championship under the guidance of then-Cal coach and current Penn head coach Geoff Bond. Shald would go on to post finishes of third (2008) and second (2009) while rowing in the varsity eight for Cal.
Upon graduation, Shald spent time training with the USRowing national team, winning a silver medal in the eight at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup in Sydney.
