PHILADELPHIA—Despite all the successes it enjoyed this past season—a third straight Ivy League title, No. 2 national ranking—the Penn women's lacrosse program ultimately fell short of achieving its chief goal for 2009: winning the NCAA Championship.
Reaching the tournament's semifinal, the Quakers collided with their ouster from the previous two springs, Northwestern. The resilient Red and Blue battled back from a four-goal deficit in the final 6:22 of regulation to force overtime.A second extra period was required to decide the exhilarating 13-12 outcome, taken by Northwestern, which went on to five-peat two days later.
In the final installment of an interview series recently recorded with the Penn Sports Network's Dan Fritz, the club's head coach Karin Brower shared her perspective on the loss several months removed from the game, and also outlined her hopes for Penn heading into the 2010 campaign.
