World Team Trials Results/Brackets
OKLAHOMA CITY - Junior Micah Burak and assistant coach Matt Valenti each won matches at the 2011 World Team Trials, but were unable to advance to earn a spot on Team USA for the 2011 World Championships during the qualifying tournament.
Burak, the 12th-seed out of 12 wrestlers in the Challenge Tournament, went 2-2 overall at the tournament in the 96 kg/211.5 pounds weight class. In the first round, Burak - who was competing for Athletes in Action - defeated No. 5 seed Tyler Lehman from Minnesota Storm by fall (1-7, 1:48). After falling behind big in the first period and again early in the second, Burak piled up six points in the second before scoring the fall on the 2010 FILA Jr. World Team member.
In the quarterfinals, Burak was edged by No. 4 Aaron Anspach from the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, 2-2, 3-3. Even though the point totals were the same for both wrestler, Anspach - the 2007 NCAA runner-up at heavyweight - took advantage of scoring last in the first period and a three-point takedown in the second to advance.
Burak responded with a 2-2, 2-0 win over No. 6 Brent Jones from the Cavalier Wrestling Club in the consolation round. He scored twice in the final 31 seconds of the first period to win the opening stanza and scored two points with 20 seconds to go to advance. In the consolation quarterfinals, Burak was defeated by the No. 1 seed in the bracket, Jack Jensen from the Gator Wrestling Club, 0-1, 0-2. Jensen took the first period with a push out in the final five seconds before winning the second period from a clinch.
Valenti entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed at 60 kg/132 pounds and he dispatched the No. 4 seed Drew Headlee of Sunkist Kids, 0-1, 5-1, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. After Headlee took the first period from a clinch, Valenti opened up in the second with a three-point throw 22 seconds in and another two-point maneuver 10 seconds later for the win. In the third, Valenti scored twice with 40 seconds to go and held off Headlee who scored one point with 20 seconds left.
In the semifinals, Valenti took on top-seeded Shawn Bunch from the Gator Wrestling Club. Bunch, a 2009 World Team member and 2010 U.S. Open champion only scored twice in the match, but Valenti wasn't able to counter and was eliminated, 0-1, 0-1. In the consolation semifinals, Valenti was defeated by No. 6 Logan Stieber from the New York Athletic Club, 3-9, 0-6. Valenti had an early lead on a three-point throw in the first period, but Stieber, a former Junior national champion who finished fourth at the World Team Trials in 2010 stormed back for the win.
