Callow Cup and M.I.T. Up Next for Lightweights

Live Twitter Updates

PHILADELPHIA - Two races are on tap this Saturday for the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team. First, the No. 9 Quakers head to Annapolis, Md., to compete for the Callow Cup against No. 7 Navy. Then the Red and Blue head back to Philadelphia to take on No. 10 M.I.T. on the Schuylkill River during the afternoon.

The Quakers have an early start against Navy as the Callow Cup race is set to launch at 7 a.m. That is followed by the second varsity (7:20 a.m.), first freshman (7:40 a.m.) and third varsity races (8 a.m.). The M.I.T. duel begins at 3 p.m., with the second freshman 4+ and the second varsity 4+. The first freshman row at 3:40 p.m., and the first varsity crews race at 4 p.m. A complete schedule is listed below.

The Callow Cup was established by the Friends of Pennsylvania Rowing on April 23, 1955, in honor of Russell “Rusty” Callow, who coached at both Penn and the U.S. Naval Academy. Callow retired following the 1959 season after being associated with rowing for more than 50 years. Navy has won the Cup 29 times, while Penn, who's last victory came in 2000, has claimed it 26 times.

In the battle for the Callow Cup last year, a late push wasn't enough for the Quakers against No. 3 Navy on the Schuylkill River. Navy opened up a lead over the first varsity boats from Penn and Saint Joseph's. The Hawks fell off the pace and were unable to keep up, but the Quakers stayed within striking distance. Though Navy opened up an open-water lead, Penn drew closer down the stretch and closed to within two seconds at the finish line. The Midshipmen won with a time of 5:52.5, Penn came across in 5:54.5 and Saint Joseph's finished in 6:12.39.

Last week, against the No. 1 team in the nation, Penn placed second in the Wood-Hammond Cup on the Schuylkill River. The Quakers topped No. 6 Georgetown, but Princeton took home the trophy with a winning time of 5:43.5. No. 10 Penn eventually grew a comfortable advantage over Georgetown and finished in 5:48.4. The guest Hoyas were third as they finished the course in 5:51.6.
