WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Junior Kyle Calvo leads the field in the decathlon after one day and five events at the Wake Forest Open. Sophomore Max Westman is in third. Thursday only featured the decathlon and women's heptathlon, the bulk of the meet will begin Friday morning in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Calvo amassed 3798 points through five events and holds a 157-point lead heading into the second day of events. He won the long jump with a leap of 7.04m. He tied for second with a height of 1.97m in the high jump and finished fifth in the 100m (11.30), 400m (50.75) and shot put (12.29m).
Not far behind--just 54 points out of second place--Westman scored 3587 points through five events. He had his best performance in the 400m with a second-place time of 49.61. He took third in the 100m (11.28), fourth in the long jump (6.76m), seventh in the high jump (1.82m) and 11th in shot put (11.14m).
Junior Mike Hall began the day with a time of 11.94 in the 100m followed by leaping 6.15m in the long jump. He marked 11.63m in the shot put but was a scratch in the high jump and did not complete the other events.
The competition will continue Friday with the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m run.
