Carelli, Westman Earn All-Ivy Honors for Men's Track and Field

Men's Indoor IC4A Qualifiers

Men's 2009 Indoor Performance List

PHILADELPHIA – Senior Max Westman and junior John Carelli each earned All-Ivy honors for the University of Pennsylvania men's track and field team for their accomplishments at the 2009 Indoor Heptagonal Championships in Cambridge, Mass. Feb. 28-March 1. Carelli garnered both first and second team honors, while Westman took home second team merits.

The top Ivy League performers in each individual event and the top team in each relay event earn selection to the All-Ivy League indoor track and field first team. The second Ivy finishers earn second team honors.

It is the first such distinction for both individuals as Carelli won the Heptagonal championship in the triple jump and placed second in the long jump. Westman was the runner-up in the heptathlon.

Carelli was the only competitor in the field to pass 15 meters on two occasions during the triple jump. The junior from Allentown, Pa., reached a career-best 15.16 meters (49 feet, 9 inches) on his third jump in the qualifying round to win the championship.

As the first Quaker to win the indoor Heptagonal championship in the triple jump since Tuan Wreh in 2002, Carelli has now won the event in all five meets in which he has competed this season.

Westman was fourth in the heptathlon after the first day, but won two of the three events on day two to rally into All-Ivy status. He won the 60-meter hurdles with his time of 8.25 and his finish of 2:46.34 in the 1,000 meters topped the field. The Lower Merion High School product finished with a season-best 5,092 points and was only bested by the eventual Co-Athlete of the Meet.

Carelli, Westman and 11 other Quakers are set to compete in the IC4A Championships this weekend, March 7-8, in Boston, Mass.
