Cat Makarewich Earns Ivy and Big 5 Weekly Honors

Big 5 Release

Philadelphia
- Penn starting senior guard Cat Makarewich received not one but two weekly honors as the New Fairfield, Conn. native was named the Ivy League and Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week after torching Northeastern for 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. The Quakers defeated the Huskies, 76-48, in the season opener at The Palestra.

Makarewich, one of five senior captains on the Red and Blue women’s basketball squad, wasted no time en route to her career-high point total. She shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first half and finished the game 7-of-10 from three-point range. Her seven trifectas were also a personal best and tied Colleen Kelly for the most in a single game by a Quaker.

Her point total and three-point field goals were not the only career highs Makarewich set against Northeastern. The senior also played all 40 minutes in the victory, a first in her collegiate career.

Penn opens the Big 5 season on Nov. 23 against La Salle in The Palestra. The Red and Blue then head to Boulder, Colo. for the 18th Annual Coors Classic hosted by the University of Colorado with No. 2 LSU and No. 24 Maryland also participating. Penn opens Ivy League play on Jan. 28, 2005 at Yale, a game that will be televised on the YES Network.
