PHILADELPHIA - Now at the halfway point of the 2011-12 season, the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team has raised more than $1,000 towards the team's Charge for a Cure initiative. Donors have pledged a donation for every offensive charge taken by the Quakers this season, with each month of the five-month initiative dedicated towards the fight against a different disease.

November: 13 charges for American Cancer Society
December: 8 charges for Autism Speaks
January: 3 charges for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
February: ALS Association of America
March: The Michael J. Fox Foundation (Parkinson’s Disease)

Join In! Please join the women's basketball team as it looks to make a difference in the lives of the people that these diseases affect every day. Fans pledge a donation for every offensive charge the Quakers take this year, typically between fifty cents and $1 per charge. To join the team in their Charge for a Cure, contact assistant coach Kara Cassidy at karacass@upenn.edu. For more information, click here.

Thus far, Penn has accumulated 24 total charges, which is just under the total of 29 charges through this part of last season. The team finished the year with 53 charges and was able to raise more than $4,000 in the first year of the Charge for a Cure initiative.

This season, the Quakers' efforts have benefited the American Cancer Society in November and Autism Speaks in December. January is dedicated to Leukemia and all donations throughout the month will go towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
