THE RACE - The Penn heavyweight rowing team travels to Princeton to take on the Tigers and Columbia in the Childs Cup. It is the first Ivy race of the season for the Quakers, who opened up their slate two weekends ago at the Windermere Classic in Redwood Shores, Calif.

LAST SEASON - Princeton ran away with last year's Childs Cup, winning in open water by 14.2 seconds over Columbia in 6:07.7 on the Cooper River. Penn finished third in 6:23.7.

THE HISTORY - The Childs Cup represents one of the oldest competitions in intercollegiate rowing, dating back to its first race in 1879 between Penn, Princeton and Columbia. It has been dominated by Princeton in recent years, with the Tigers claiming 12 in a row. Penn last won in 1993, the final of its five in a row from 1989 to 1993. The challenge cup was presented by George W. Childs, owner and publisher of the Philadelphia Public Ledger, for what was originally a four-oared race. In 1889, it was changed to an eights race. Overall, Penn has won the cup44 times, Princeton 39 times, andColumbia 11 times.
