Cissie Leary Invitational Updates

PHILADELPHIA –Penn will send Ria Vaidya to the semifinals of the 2015 Cissie Leary Invitational's Flight A, after she picked up a pair of wins on Day Two.

Vaidya won in straight sets to open her day, defeating Princeton's Emily Hahan, 7-6(5), 6-3. In the quarterfinals, she needed three sets to knock off Cornell's Rima Asatrian, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.

The Quakers have two in the Flight B semifinals in Lina Qostal and Marta Kowalska. Kowalska needed three sets to win her first match of the day, but then defeated Princeton's Sara Goodwin, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarters. Qostal had a pair of straight-set wins.

Lina Qostal and OJ Singh won Flight B in doubles, scoring a 6-3 over Goodwin/Kalhorn of Princeton.

Day One...
The first day of the 2015 Cissie Leary Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania concluded with the host Quakers sending three individuals to the second round of Flight A and the Red and Blue earning spots in both the A and B Flights of doubles.

Kana Daniel and Sonya Latycheva won three different matches by 6-2 scores to reach the Flight A final in doubles.

Lina Qostal and OJ Singh also had three victories to reach the Flight B final in doubles, with a pair of 6-1 wins sandwiched around a 6-2 victory.

Ria Vaidya, Kana Daniel, and Sony Latycheva also had wins in Flight A singles to move on to Round Two. Latycheva and Daniel had hard-fought three-set victories to move on. Daniel dropped the first set to Maryland’s Olga Bredikhina, 1-6, and then rallied for a 6-0 win in set two. The third set needed a tiebreaker, but went the way of Daniel, 10-5.

Latycheva won the first set over Olaya Inclan Solis of Saint John’s, 6-4, and dropped the second set by the same score. In the third, Latycheva scored a 10-7 win to move on.

In Flight B singles, Lina Qostal, Nicole Berkman, and Marta Kowalska each won their first match to advance to Saturday’s Round Two.

Action resumes in the Hecht Tennis Center at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
