PHILADELPHIA - The official draws for the NCAA Women's Tennis Individual Championships were announced on Tuesday and Penn freshman Connie Hsu will be tested right away in the opening round. When the draw was revealed, Hsu found herself matched up with Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame. Frilling is seeded fifth overall in the tournament. The tournament gets underway on Wednesday and Hsu and Frillingare scheduled tohit the courtsat 8 p.m. EST, (5 p.m. on the west coast).

Frilling, a junior, is a two-time qualifier to the NCAA Championships in singles and earned All-American status as a freshman. Along with her lofty national ranking, she comes into the opening round of the NCAA Championships with a 26-6 record this season. She went 18-4 competing at No. 1 this spring for The Fighting Irish. However, Frilling has struggled lately in her matches against several highly ranked players. Frilling has lost her last two completed matches and was trailing in the third match that wouldnot be completed because the teamscore was alreadydecided prior to the culminationof her match in the NCAA Team Championships.

Although the two have not met, they do have four common opponents on the season. Both Players own victories over Yale's Vicki Brooks in straight sets. Hsu won 6-4, 6-1, while Frilling won 6-1, 6-2. Frilling owns a pair of victories over Denise Mureson of Michigan, while Mureson eliminated Hsu from the ITA Indoor Championships during the fall season in a third-set tiebreak.

Hsu and Frilling have also played against Emily Frasor of Virginia and Stephanie Wetmore of Georgetown. For Frilling, both of these matches went unfinished because the team score had been decided when these women met in team duals. Against Frasor, Frilling dropped the first set and won the second set before the team score was decided. In the match with Wetmore, Frilling won the first set, but was down 4-3 in the second set before the team score was decided. In the fall, Hsu defeated Frasor twice (6-2, 6-0 & 6-4, 6-1). She also downed Wetmore (6-3, 6-0) in the dual match against Georgetown.

The NCAA Championships are a single elimination tournament. With a victory, Hsu would move on to the Round of 32 which will be played on Thursday. For complete coverage of the NCAA Tennis Championships, visit Stanford's NCAA Tournament Central Webpage.
