Cornell Tops Lightweight Rowing in Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Penn men’s lightweight rowing team was bested by second-ranked Cornell and No. 5 Harvard in Ithaca, N.Y. for the Matthews-Leonard Cup races held on Friday, April 8th.

Cornell retained possession of the Leonard Cup for the fifth straight year as the winner of the majority of the 8+ races. The Big Red also took home the Matthews Trophy as the winner of the varsity eight race in the dual regatta between Cornell and Penn. Harvard, a regular participant in the race, is not eligible to win the Matthews Cup.

The decision was made to move the racing from Saturday to Friday due to impending inclement weather expected in the region. Cold temps provided good conditions overall as the Quakers competed against two of the top lightweight teams in the country.

Penn placed third in four of the five 8+ races on the evening. The Fourth Varsity 8+ kicked off the regatta and placed third behind Cornell and Harvard in a time of 5:55.6.

In the Varsity 8+, the Quakers battled it out with Harvard but finished just behind Crimson for third place by two seconds.

Cornell’s winning time in the Third Varsity 8+ was well ahead of Harvard (6:16.0) and Penn (6:20.6).

In the Second Varsity 8+, Cornell clocked another winning time of 5:56.4 to beat Harvard (5:59.0) and Penn (6:08.3).

The Quakers final race of the night came in the Varsity 4, where they finished second (7:37.3) to Cornell’s winning time of 7:11.2.

The Red and Blue return to action next weekend on Saturday, April 16th when they host the Dodge Cup on the Schuylkill River against Yale and Columbia.
