PHILADELPHIA - Both the men's and women's cross country teams are off to fast starts in the 2012 season, and on Sunday they were rewarded with recognition from the website HepsTrack.com.
A week after fellow freshman Thomas Awad was named the Rookie of the Week on the men's side, Brendan Smith followed up by winning the award for the second time this season for the Quakers. Smith's time of 25:57.37 in the 8K was good for 12th place at the Iona Meet of Champions and was the top finish for Penn, who came in sixth in the 14-team event.
On the women's side, senior Leslie Kovach took her normal place at the top for the Quakers, leading the Red and Blue to a second place finish after clocking in at 22:40.07 in the 6K race. She finished the Iona Meet of Champions in fourth place.
Penn will look to capitalize off its strong start to the season when they race next in the Paul Short Invitational. The Sept. 28 race will be hosted by Lehigh beginning at 10 a.m.
