Cross Country Takes Off for Two Invitationals

PHILADELPHIA – Not only does the University of Pennsylvania cross country team’s weekend agenda have a trip scheduled to South Bend, but it also includes separate travel plans to Bethlehem. On Friday, 16 members of the men’s and women’s teams will compete in the 58th Annual Notre Dame Invitational, while 17 others will race in the 41st Annual Paul Short Run, presented by Asics, on Saturday.

Both the men and the women will compete in the Blue Race at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, which is comprised of DI regionally ranked teams.

Out of the 24 women’s teams racing, 23 are regionally ranked: six teams from the Great Lakes Region, five from the Mountain Region, one from the South Central Region, three (including Penn) from the Mid-Atlantic Region, two from the Southeast Region, five from the Midwest Region, and one from the West Region. Some of the top ranked opponents the Quakers will face include No. 2 New Mexico (Mountain), No. 3 BYU (Mountain), and No. 3 Penn State (Mid-Atlantic). On Saturday, one of the nation’s largest cross country meets will get underway with more than 5,600 runners. Hosted by Lehigh, the Paul Short Run will be the first time this season that Penn competes in a women’s 6k and a men’s 8k.

First to run on the course will be the three Quakers participating in the Men’s Open: Victor Allen, Tommy Mulroy, Kirk Webb. After its completion, Brendan Smith, Jack Huemmler, Keaton Naff, Thomas Connelly, Patrick Hally, Chris Hatler, and Chris Luciano will represent the Red and Blue in the Men’s Gold Race. The women – Brianna Bradley, Sophie DeBode, Hailey Dougherty, Isabel Griffith, Jillian Kelly, Shannon McCarthy, Karen Xiang -- will then contend in the Brown Race.
