PHILADELPHIA – On Sunday, HepsTrack.com announced its Week One Cross Country Athletes of the Week, and University of Pennsylvania freshman Abby Hong was named Female Rookie of the Week. The Quakers competed in the annual Big 5 Invitational at the Belmont Plateau in West Fairmont Park last Friday, where Hong led the Red and Blue in a 1-2-3-4-5 finish and team title in the women’s 4k over local rivals La Salle, Saint Joseph’s, and Temple. Penn scored 15 points -- a 36-point difference between second-place La Salle.
The freshman finished first overall and crossed the line at 14:21.5. She was followed by junior Elyssa Gensib, junior captain Amy Darlington, sophomore Ashley Montgomery, and junior Gabrielle Cuccia. The pack of five Quakers completed the race within a four-second spread.
Penn will continue to develop and implement its plan as both the women’s and men’s team prepares for the next competition – the Mainline Invitational – and the remaining races to come.
