Cuccinello Named CSFL Defensive Player of the Week

CSFL Weekly Release

PHILADELPHIA - Following an outstanding week one that saw sprint football get out to a quick start with a 34-0 shutout victory over rival Princeton, senior linebacker Matt Cuccinello has been named CSFL Defensive Player of the Week. Last season, Cuccinello was named honorable mention All-CSFL and he has quickly adjusted to an increased role on the Quakers' defense.

In just the first week of the season, Cuccinello looked to be in mid-season form as he recorded 10 tackles in the first game against Princeton. Nine of those 10 tackles were solo tackles for Cuccinello, who was constant force in the Penn defense. The Quakers' captain also had two sacks that resulted in a loss of 16 yards in sum. He also had five solo tackles behind the line of scrimmage and assisted on a sixth tackle that resulted in negative yardage. On those six plays that went for a loss, Cuccinello's tackles resulted in a net loss of 28 yards.

Cuccinello led a Quakers' defense that recorded a shutout of Princeton in the season opener and held the Tigers' offense to negative one yards rushing on the day. He and the rest of his sprint football teammates will be back in action this Friday night at Franklin Field when Navy comes to town for a 7 p.m. showdown. Last year, Penn defeated Navy 24-14, with the victory propelling them to the 2010 CSFL Championship.
