Dana Bonincontri Headed to Michigan for NCAA Regionals

PHILADELPHIA - Two weeks after being selected as an All-Around competitor for the NCAA Regionals in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dana Bonincontri will finally get the chance to compete this Saturday when the meet gets underway at 6 p.m. Eastern. Bonincontri is the first Penn gymnast to qualify for the regional tournament since Jordan Brewer qualified during the 2009 season.

Bonincontri has been the Quakers most consistent gymnast the entire season. Since her third place finish in the All-Around at the Ivy Classic, Bonincontri has won the All-Around in the last three meets, including the ECAC Championships. She has also won the uneven bars four times this season and the balance beam twice in Penn's 10 meets.

Since she is the lone Penn gymnast to qualify for the regional tournament, Bonincontri will be competing alongside Ohio State University, who is one of the six squads competing this weekend for the team championship.

Bonincontri, will have to sit out the first rotation as her group will be on a bye during the opening rotation. Her first event of the evening will be the Floor Exercise. She should have plenty of momentum coming into this event as she scored a career-high 9.8 in this event during the ECAC Championships. She has scored 9.75 or higher five times in nine meets this season on the floor.

In the third rotation of the evening, Bonincontri will move over to the vault for her second event. She set her career-high in this event during the Ivy Classic with a 9.7, which was good enough for first in that meet. She has scored above 9.6 in seven of the nine times she has competed in this event.

After her second bye during the fourth rotation, Bonincontri will move to the uneven bars for the fifth rotation. She scored a career-best 9.85 in this event back in February against Cornell. She has been consistent ever since, scoring at least 9.75 in five meets over the course of the season.

She will finish up her night on the Balance Beam. The past two times competing in this event, Bonincontri has scored a career-best 9.775. She has achieved this score a total of three times this season. Five times she has scored 9.7 or better on the beam this season.

In order to qualify for the National Championships, Bonincontri must place in the top-two of the All-Around for all the gymnasts whose teams did not finish in the top-two in the team race. For fans unable to make the trip, they can follow Bonincontri's score throughout the evening through the University of Michigan's Live Stats.
