PHILADELPHIA -After a vote from the members of the men's lightweight rowing team, senior David Mannion was named captain for the 2009-10 University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team. Prior to being elected captain this season, Mannion served as commodore for the Quakers last year.
"As the commodore for the past year I think Dave is very qualified for this position," said first-year head coach Nick Baker. "I think he's a great leader and a great spokesman for the Class of 2010. He had high demands of the team during the summer and I know he'll do a good job of leading them through the winter and into the spring.
Along with acting as commodore, Mannion was a letterwinner in 2008.The Delaware native splithis time between the first and second varsity boats last year and figures to once again be a key cog for the team in the upcoming season.
Mannion and the rest of the Penn lightweight rowing team will kick off their fall season on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Quadricentennial Regatta in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., hosted by Marist College.
