Day 1 Results: Women's Swimming Ivy Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After preliminaries Thursday morning, the University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming and diving team sent twelve athletes into day one finals of the Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championships that evening in Brown’s Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatic Center. Of the twelve competing, two were in the A Finals and four were in the B Finals. At the end of the day, the Quakers totaled 243 points, just one point behind fourth place Columbia.

In the first event of the evening, the 200 free relay “A team” – freshman Rochelle Dong, senior Shelby Fortin, junior Christina Hurley, and junior Irene Katopodis – took fourth place with a time of 1:32.36 and earned the Red and Blue 52 points.

Fortin was in the pool again right after for the 500 free, where she was looking for her fourth title in the event. Even though Fortin turned in the top prelim time (4:43.73), Yale’s Eva Fabian edged out Fortin by 12 one-hundredths of a second when she touched the wall first at 4:44.00. Fortin may have a chance to continue in the 500 free though, as her time made the NCAA B Cut.

Fortin’s finish also gave Penn 28 points, while sophomore Meghan Kwarcinski added 13 with her finish in the B Final. Fellow sophomores Emma Siewert and Morgan Scott raced in the C Finals and put up an additional nine points for the Quakers.

The third event of the evening was the 200 IM, where the Red and Blue had freshman Ellie Grimes competing in the B Final and senior Katherine Ashenfelter in the C Final. Grimes finished in thirteenth with her time of 2:03.2 and Ashenfelter finished in twenty-second at 2:05.13. Points combined, the two Quakers added 17 team points.

Making her debut as a freshman in the 50 free A Final was Rochelle Dong, where she placed fourth and 17 hundredths of a second behind third place. Dong’s time, 23.01, was also just two hundredths of a second off of making the NCAA B Cut time.

Hurley raced in the B Final, finishing at 23.42, and sophomore Lauren Church, junior Lauryn Brown, and Irene Katopodis swam in the C Final. Church placed 18 with a time of 23.58, Brown finished at 23.66 in 20, and Katopodis took 22 when she touched the wall at 23.68.

The first diving round was the 1 meter dive. Freshman Cassidy Golden made her way into the B Final and scored 222.75 points, giving her a 14 place finish and 13 team points.

The day concluded with the 400 medley relay, where the “A team” – Church, freshman Haley Wickham, Dong, and Fortin – gave Penn 54 points with their third place finish at 3:39.18.
