2008 NCAA Fencing Championships Results - Women's Day One
COLUMBUS - The four fencers representing Penn in the 2008 NCAA Women's Fencing Championships have completed Day One of action at Ohio State. After the first rounds of fencing, the Quakers sit in ninth place overall with 23 bout wins. The host Buckeyes are in first place with 62 wins.
Ilana Sinkin leads all Penn fencers in individual rankings. She is competing in foil and currently ranks 11th after the first day. She has won seven of the 14 bouts she has fenced, six victories behind first place Oksana Dmytruk of Ohio State. More importantly, she is five wins out of fourth place, the final spot a fencer can be in to gain entry into the semifinals. Sinkin is joined by Zoya Abdikulova in foil competition. Abdikulova finds herself in 19th place after the first day of action with three wins.
Danielle Kamis finished her first day of the NCAA Championships with seven wins in sabre, good enough to sit in 12th place after Day One. She is four wins behind fourth-place Emily Jacobson of Columbia and six wins behind first-place Sibhan Byrne of Ohio State. The fourth Penn fencer at NCAAs, Alexis Baran is in 16th place in sabre after Day One, only one win behind her teammate Kamis.
Fencing resumes Friday morning with the completion of the preliminary rounds. After that, the top four fencers in each weapon will advance to the semifinals.
