Day One of College Decathlon, Heptathlon Complete

PHILADELPHIA - The first day of the College Men's Decathlon and Women's College Heptathlon competitions were completed Tuesday at Franklin Field. The competition will conclude Wednesday afternoon.

LSU's Darion Powell takes a lead into the second day of competition after racking up 3,701 points in Tuesday's decathlon competition. Powell took first placein each of the first threeevents -- the 100-meter dash, the long jump and the shot put -- to build up a substantial lead. Cornell's T.J. Toro won the high jump, and then Devin Barry of Mount St. Mary's won the 400-meter dash to close out the day.

Barry is second with 3,451 points, while Avi Thomas of C.W. Post is third (3,147) and Toro is close behind in fourth (3,137).

On the women's side, Buky Bamigboye of Georgetown is first with 3,051 points, but only slightly ahead of Seton Hall's Dominique Washington (3,025). Bamigboye won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.52 -- ahead of Washington's 14.71 -- before Washington took first in the high jump.

Penn's Shani Boston won the shot put by more than two meters, before Bamigboyewon her secondevent of the day by placing first in the 200-meter dash.

Action concludes Wednesday, the men will run their final five events while the women complete their last four.
