NEWARK, Del. - TheUniversity of Pennsylvaniawomen's basketball team fell victim to a suffocating defensive effort by Delaware, and the result was a 78-34 loss at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del., on Wednesday evening.
The Quakers (1-4) were outmatched from the outset by the Blue Hens (4-1), who opened up the game with a 12-0 run to set the pace for the entire contest.
Delaware's tough zone defense was so effective, Penn finished the first half with just two field goals and 21 turnovers, finding itself trailing 40-11 at the midpoint. The Blue Hens sustainedtheir intensity in the second half and ended uplimiting the Quakers to just 22 percent shooting from the field with a total of 33 turnovers for the game.
Penn senior center Jennifer Fleischer was the only Quaker in double figures with 10 points to compliment seven rebounds, while Ashley Gray and Rachel Wilson added five points apiece.
Melissa Czorniewy led Delaware with 19 points and four steals while Chrissy Fisher added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Quakers will try to snap its four-game losing streak on the road against Big 5 foe Villanova on Sunday, Dec. 4, at The Pavilion. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
