STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Besting their previous IC4A qualifying marks, the distance medley relay team and sophomore James Foreman's first-place finish in the pole vault highlighted the first day of competition for the men's indoor track and field team Friday at the Penn State National meet.

Foreman cleared 4.85 meters (15 feet, 11 inches) as one of only two competitors to successfully pass the height. He won the event over Dan Garrett of Akron via tiebreaker. The effort surpassed his previous IC4A qualifier from the Great Dane Classic of 4.80 meters on Jan. 23.

The distance medley relay had previously qualified for the IC4A Championships on the same track at the Penn State Open on Jan. 17. At that time, the team posted a mark of 10:18.85. Four freshman - Joe Myrie, Jared Barchus, Kyle McFadden and Michael Cunningham - exceeded that time on Friday night with a 12th-place finish of 10:12.70.

Senior Sean McGinley was eighth in the 5,000 meters with his time of 15:06.46.

Track events on the final day will start at 10:20 a.m. with the 400 meters and conclude at approximately 6:15 p.m. The high jump (11 a.m.), triple jump (3 p.m.) and shot put (3 p.m.) finals are Saturday afternoon.
