PHILADELPHIA - Elizabeth Donald and Rebecca Donald, a pair of returning juniors at the University of Pennsylvania, won gold medals at the 2009 US Rowing Club Nationals the weekend of July 18-19 inOak Ridge, Tenn.
The twin sisters claimed first place in the Women’s Senior Final on Saturday, then the Women’s Intermediate Final on Sunday. They clinched victory with times of 7:39:70 and 7:38:75, respectively.
Following their wins, these two Penn juniors will compete in the 127th Annual Royal Canadian Henley Regatta which will take place in St. Catharines, Ontario in August.The Donald sisters placed second at this regatta last summer.
"I'm excited for Liz and Rebecca," said Penn women's rowing coach Mike Lane, who enters his fourth year at the Quakers helm in 2009-10. "Their ability to row at such a high level during the summer months can only bode well for them and for our program. It is great to see them having this kind of success during the summer months, and I look forward to having them back on campus to help make us better in the fall."
The Donald twins have rowed in Penn’s varsity eight each of the past two years, leading the boat to a fifth-place finish at Eastern Sprints in 2008 and a seventh-place finish in May. Following the 2009 campaign, Liz received first-team Mid-Atlantic recognition from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) while Rebecca was a second-team honoree. Liz also was a CRCA National Scholar Athlete honoree this year.
