Doubles Point Not Enough for Men's Tennis to Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After starting the match off with the advantage from the doubles point, the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team couldn’t quite keep up in the singles matches and fell to Yale, 5-2, on Saturday in the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. The No. 67 Quakers (14-5, 0-2 Ivy) will turn right around and regroup for No. 62 Brown, hoping for their first Ivy League win. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m. in the Pizzitola Sports Center.

No. 2 doubles pair sophomore Matt Nardella and Nicholai Westergaard recorded the first win for the Red and Blue, defeating Alex Hagermoser and Tyler Lu 6-4. Junior duo Austin Kaplan and Blaine Willenborg followed up with a win of their own at No. 3 over Daniel Faierman and Photos Photiades 7-5 for the doubles points and 1-0 lead.

However, things turned south for Penn as the Quakers fell behind, dropping five of the six first sets. The Red and Blue tried to regain some ground, but the Bulldogs kept fighting and took the bottom four singles matches, in two sets, for the win. Deciding the play out the top two matches, senior captain Jeremy Court battled in a tough three-set match with Martin Svenning at No. 2. After dropping set two, 7-6, the two played a tie breaker in the third. Court came out on top, 10-5, for the second point for Penn. Freshman Nicolas Podesta and Tyler Lu also went to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1. This time, the resulted faired in favor of Yale as Podesta fell in a neck-in-neck set, 11-9.
