Dragon, McCurdy Place at FILA Junior World Team Trials

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Pennsylvania had three wrestlers compete this past weekend at the FILA Junior World Team Trials. The event took place Friday and Saturday at East Middle School. Only the champion in each weight class moved on and will represent the United States at the FILA Junior World Championships Aug. 29-Sept. 3 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Matt Dragon (74 kg) took third place in hisweight class. The sophomore-to-be lost to Tyler Sherfey (Bronco Wrestling Club) by decision0-3, 3-0, 4-1. He then came back to defeatMark Friend (Penn State)by decision5-11, 2-2, 5-3, then downed Michael Chandler (Tigerstyle WC)by decision7-6, 5-1. He ended the tournament by beating Phil Meinert (Minnesota Storm)by decision3-0, 2-1.

Brett McCurdy (66 kg) took fourth place in his weight class. Like Dragon, McCurdy began the tournament with a loss, to Matt Fittery (Mat Town USA) by decision 2-0, 0-2, 4-1. He then defeatedDaniel Leclere (Hawkeye Wrestling Club)by decision0-2, 1-1, 2-0 before losingto Matt Fittery (Mat Town USA)by decision1-1, 3-1.

Jack Sullivan (96 kg) lost both of his matches at the event, to Daniel Erekson (Hawkeye Training Club)by pin2-0,1:19 andto Thor Moen (Sunkist) by technical fall 9-3, 8-1.
