Qualifying Singles Draw
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Women's tennis received some good news with the announcement of the ITA Northeast Regional draws Thursday. In addition to the three singles players in qualifying looking to join the three singles players in the main draw, Penn has added a third doubles pairing to the Round of 64. Daniela DePaoli and Emma Whitfield were listed as alternates in the prior selection, but with pairings dropping out right before the tournament, DePaoli and Whitfield will be able to take part in both singles and doubles action this weekend.
The Northest ITA Regional schedule gets underway with two rounds of qualifying singles. Each player entered in the qualifying singles draw will have to win two matches Friday to advance to the main draw. In the afternoon session, the Round of 64 and Round of 32 doubles will take place.
In singles, DePaoli received the fourth seed of the qualifying draw. She will take on Saint Peter's Adina Halagian Friday morning at 8 a.m. With a win in her first match, DePaoli would be back in action at 10:30 a.m. to square off against the winner of Joana Sun (Marist) and Chloe Pike (Stony Brook).
Jaime Yapp-Shing enters the qualifying singles unseeded after playing just two singles matches this fall. In her opening round match she will face seventh-seeded freshman Gabby Sullivan of Cornell. If she wins the 8 a.m. opener, she will face the winner of Elizabeth Verow (Seton Hall) and Hilary Valenzuela (Manhattan) at 11 a.m.
Whitfield will take the court at 9:30 a.m. for singles and face the sixth-seeded Sam Gridley of Harvard. With a win, Whitfield would move on to play the winner of Jackie Raynor (Quinnipiac) and Kate Donnelly (Sacred Heart) at noon. Gridley played No. 5 singles for Harvard last season against Penn.
In main draw singles, Sol Eskenazi and Alex Ion are each seeded and were two of the 32 players that received byes into the Round of 64. They will each face winners of the Round of 128 matches.
Stephanie Do will open her singles play Saturday morning against Princeton's freshman Katie Goepel. With a win, Do would move on to face Cornell's Christine Ordway. Ordway and Do had met in the Round of 32 at the Cissie Leary Invitational earlier this fall.
In doubles, Eskenazi and Yapp-Shing earned the fourth overall seed in the draw following a 7-0 record in doubles together. They will face the pairing of Motyl/Swiszcz (UMass) in the first round at 5 p.m. With a win, they would play again at 7 p.m. against the winner of Santos/Edelblum (Binghamton) and Genkina/Fritzinger (Fordham).
Do and Ion will be the first Penn doubles team in action when they hit the court at 2 p.m. In their first match they take on Manhattan's team of Johnson/Turano. With an opening round victory, they would face the winner of (13) Simidia/Ali (Fordham) and McCarthy/Sun (Marist) at 6 p.m. Friday.
After getting in the draw, DePaoli and Whitfield will take to the doubles court at 4 p.m. against Yale's Brook/Yu. With a win, they would be back in action at 7 p.m. against either Viebrock/Labarth (Quinnipiac) or Sher/Portela (Seton Hall).
After playing out the singles qualifying and two rounds of doubles on Friday, action will pick up again Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Up first will be the Round of 16 doubles matches. Also on Saturday, the singles main draw will get underway with the Round of 128 and the Round of 64 matches.
