PHILADELPHIA – Drew Baustian, a former IRA medalist rower at Cornell University, has been named assistant coach of the heavyweight rowing program at the University of Pennsylvania, serving as the coach of the freshmen crews. The announcement was made today by Greg Myhr, the Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Rowing at Penn. Baustian's official start date will be August 1.

"I am truly excited to have Drew join our staff here at Penn,” Myhr said. “Drew was an integral member of some outstanding Cornell varsity heavyweight eights. Hehas spent the past few years in professional sales and recruiting, and has also hadimpressive results working with Dr. Peter Sharis and the Quad Cities Juniors. Everyone who has worked with Drew told me the same thing - hire him - you won't regret it. Drew's work ethic, demeanor, and enthusiasm seem perfectly suited for what we need here and I'm thrilled to welcome him to Penn."

Baustian spent four years on the rowing team at Cornell, graduating in 2010. His final three seasons were spent on the First Varsity Eight where he was a member of the bronze medal crew at the 2010 IRA Regatta. While with the Big Red, Baustian twice earned the Butler Award as the team’s MVP and was named Freshman of the Year at the end of the 2007 season.

In 2009, Baustian earned a spot on the U23 World Championships roster for the United States, competing in the men’s four+ in Prague where Team USA finished fifth.

“The depth of history in the rowing program at Penn, the impressive reputation of the school as a whole, the world-class rowing facilities, and the high-caliber student-athletes who comprise the team are just a few of the reasons I am excited to accept the challenge as the freshman heavyweight coach at Penn,” Baustian said. “I cannot wait to see all of these elements working together to make fast boats and bring success to the University.”

For the last year, Baustian has served as an assistant coach with Y Quad Cities Junior Rowing in Moline, Ill. The primary technical instructor for the club, Baustian guided Y Quad Cities to nine qualifying boats for the US Rowing Youth National Championships and earned the sculling points trophies in both the boys and girls divisions at the Midwest Junior Rowing Championships. At the US Rowing Youth National Championships, two of Y Quad Cities’ boats claimed first place with another earning a bronze medal.

An agricultural sciences major at Cornell with a minor in marketing, Baustian has worked professionally at The Climate Corporation since 2011 as a District Sales Manager.
