PHILADELPHIA – There will be eight members of the University of Pennsylvania men’s track and field team in Charlotte, N.C., this weekend for the NCAA East Regional Championships on May 29-30.

The Regional meet begins Friday afternoon for Quakers when the 4x100-meter relay begins at 4:15 p.m. Runners Joey Brown, Alan Hill, Kevin Baidoo and Kevin Benjamin will look to beat their season best of 40.83 which earned them the Heptagonal Championship and an NCAA Regional bid. This is the second trip to the NCAA East Regional meet for both Benjamin and Brown. Their first time qualifying was in 2007 when they helped the 4x100 relay finish at 41.21. The foursome will look to qualify for the relay finals to be held on Saturday at 5:10 p.m.

Following the relay, Penn has two runners competing in the 800-meter run. Beginning at 7:40 p.m. Friday, sophomore Darryll Oliver and freshman Brian Fulton will run in the 800-meter preliminary race. Both Oliver and Fulton made their regional marks at the Heptagonal Championships where Oliver set, and then bested, a personal record while winning Heptagonal gold. Heading into the weekend, Oliver is currently ranked fourth and Fulton is 20th in the East Region. Oliver and Fulton will look to qualify for the finals that take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

Penn’s only two field event participants, juniors Anthony Abitante and John Carelli, will begin their events on Saturday afternoon. Abitante will compete in the pole vault at 3 p.m. and Carelli will begin the triple jump at 5 p.m. Both made their regional mark at the Oxford-Cambridge on April 18 and then Abitante again hit the mark at the more recent Heptagonal Championships where he finished second. Heading into the meet, Abitante is ranked ninth in the East Region and Carelli is 16th.

The top-five finishers for each individual event and the top-three finishers in each relay will win an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Championships to be held in Fayetteville, Ark., on June 10-13.
