US Lacrosse Release
PHILADELPHIA - On Tuesday, US Lacrosse announced the 38 players selected to join the Women's National Team tryout pool for the 2012-14 National Team, with recent Penn graduate Emily Leitner C'12 advancing past the first stage of tryouts.
143 players convened upon Stony Brook, N.Y. last weekend to participate in a series of games under the eye of Head Coach Ricky Fried and the selection committee. At the conclusion of the tryout, Leitner was one of four goalkeepers selected as part of a group of 38 players invited to move on to the next round of tryouts.
A unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection this season, Leitner will continue the process to earn a spot on the United States' entry to the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario as the second and final rounds of selections to be held July 27-29 at the University of Baltimore County. The 38 players advancing from the recent tryout will be joined by returning members of the 2011-12 National Team as well as players unable to compete last weekend due to participation in the NCAA Division I National Semifinals and Championship, any non-qualified Division I All-Americans, and those medically unable to compete at that time and granted a waiver to the second round.
36-40 players are expected to be selected at the July tryout to serve as the training team pool in preparation for the 2013 FIL World Cup. The final 18-player roster which will defend the United States' 2009 gold medal will not be chosen until February.
