Full NWCA Release

As Penn's campus sets into the homestretch of finals with graduation looming in the near future, Penn's wrestling program was honored for the work put in off the mats as one of 30 teams recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) as All-Academic teams. In addition, senior Erich Smith was one of 87 individual wrestlers named All-Academic.

The Quakers were one of seven EIWA programs to make the Top-30, which is determined by averaging the GPAs of the 12 total wrestlers - the 10 who competed at the qualifying event for the NCAA Championships (the EIWA Championships for Penn) and two backups. Penn's average GPA was 3.069, good for 20th in the rankings. For Penn, this marks the 13th time on the list since the award's inception in 1991. Penn was ranked No. 18 last season, its first time honored since 2008.

Penn again had an individual honored as All-Academic in NCAA qualifier Erich Smith. An Academic All-Ivy selection this winter as well as a Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area honoree, Smith came from an unseeded start at the EIWA Championships to finish third and automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. In Saint Louis, Smith won his first match, avenging a loss from earlier in the season. A chemistry major, Smith is one of seven Ivy Leaguers on the list. Last year, Mark Rappo and Gabe Burak were honored by the NWCA as All-Academic performers.
