COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2014 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships, held at Ohio State’s French Fieldhouse, came to an end on Sunday afternoon, and the University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s fencing teams finished ineighth place. The Quakers stood in 11th after the women’s competition that concluded on Friday evening, but jumped to eighth at the end of the men’s portion. The Red and Blue earned a total of 89 points and scored a total of 724 touches. The women contributed 31 points, while the men added an additional 58 points.
Representing Penn from the men’s team were sophomore Shaul Gordonand junior Steven Yangin saber; junior Jason Changin foil; and sophomore R.J. Shipp and senior Clifford Fishlerin epee.
Making it furthest in championships this year was Gordon and advanced furthest among the Penn men, earning First-Team All-America.The 2013 NCAA runner-up in sabre, he advancedto the semifinal round this yearbefore falling toPenn State’s Kaito Streets (who would end as this year's NCAA champion). Gordon tied the bout up at 9-9, but Streets went on to win, 15-13. Gordon finished tied for third with St. John’s Roman Sydorenko, bothwith 18 winsin23 bouts.
Yang scored 86 touches and finished in 11th with 11 bout wins out of 23. He earned All-American Honorable Mention.
As the lone men’s foil fencer, Chang took 16th with eight bout wins. He recorded 71 touches scored.
In epee, Shipp won 12 bouts and scored 84 touches, which placed him in 14th. Fishler also competed in epee and placed 20th with nine victories and 89 touches scored.
All-American honors are given by the United States Fencing Association to athletes based on performance at the event. The Top-4 make First Team All-American, while the fencers ranked fourth through eighth earn Second Team All-American honors and fencers ranked ninth through 12th earn All-American honorable mentions.
