Fencing Heads to OSU for NCAA Championships

PHILADELPHIA – Eight members from the University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s fencing teams will journey to Columbus to compete in the 2015 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships. Hosted by The Ohio State at French Field House, the event will span across four days beginning on Thursday, March 19. This is the second consecutive year that OSU plays as the host of the event and fifth overall. The four-day event will consist of a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. Upon the completion of the round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in the semifinal 15-touch bouts.

Out of the eight fencers representing the Red and Blue in Columbus this weekend, three competed at last year’s event. Junior Shaul Gordon (men’s sabre) advanced the furthest, earning First-Team All-America, for his third place finish. Senior captains Jason Chang (men’s foil) and Steven Yang (men’s sabre) also made the trip to Columbus last year, finishing 16th and 11th in their respective weapons.

While three freshmen will be making the trip -- Jake Raynis (men’s epee), Zsombor Garzo (men’s epee), John Vaiani (men’s foil) – sophomore Alejandra Trumble (women’s epee) will also be competing at her first NCAA Fencing Championships.

Senior captain Sarah Parmacek returns to the championships after qualifying her freshman year with a seventh-place finish at Regionals. This year, Parmacek took the title of Women’s Foil Champion and finished the dual season with a 44-25 record.
