Fencing Opens Season in New Fencing Center

PHILADELPHIA – The day has finally come for the University of Pennsylvania fencing teams, as Saturday will mark the first competition held in The Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center. Not only is it the first meet in the new center, the Penn-Princeton Invitational will also open the teams’ 2013-14 season. Joining the two Ivy League teams in Saturday’s event is Ohio State.

In many of the previous seasons, the Red and Blue attended the Garret Open hosted by Penn State at State College, with this year looking to be the Quakers’ eighth appearance since the 2003-04 season. This year’s event was cancelled, so Penn sent fencers to Cleveland to compete in the North American Cup.

A handful of Quakers also competed in the Temple Open to begin prepping for the 2013-14 season. Freshman Ricky Eschenbach placed second in men’s Epee and freshman Adil Khan placed 70, out of the 101 competing fencers. In the men’s Foil, transfer Dalton Kamish finished in 17.

For the women, a member of the Red and Blue represented each of the weapons. Senior Weny Zhoa took sixth in foil, freshman Alejandra Trumble placed ninth in Epee, and freshman Shriya Joshi took 13th in Sabre.

Saturday’s competition will be in a dual format as an open event and multi-team meet.
