PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s fencing programs will look to cap off 2015-16 in style at this weekend’s NCAA Championships in Waltham, Mass. Penn will have eight student-athletes in action—six on the men’s side and two from the women’s squad.
Competition begins on Thursday and will wrap on Saturday evening. Live stats can be found by clicking HERE, while semi-final and final bouts will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Justin Yoo, Zsombor Garzo, Raymond Chen, Shaul Gordon, Raphael Van Hoffelen, and Aaron Ahn will take center stage for the top-ranked men’s team. Ahn is a late substitution due to an illness to original qualifier, John Vaiani. Van Hoffelen recieved an at-large berth into the championships, while the other four were automatic qualifiers due to outstanding performances during the regular season and NCAA Regionals.
Yoo was the NCAA Regional champ on epee, while Garzo finished sixth. Garzo led the Quakers during the regular season, going a team-best 62-15 in dual matches.
Ahn and Chen will each take to the strips on foil. Chen placed fifth at Regionals, while going 33-17 during the regular season. Vaiani, who Ahn is replacing, received an NCAA berth for the second-straight season.
Gordon and Van Hoffelen will represent the Red and Blue on saber. Making his fourth-straight appearance at NCAA’s, Gordon ranked second on the team this season with a mark of 60-18 in dual matches.
Arabella Uhry and Simone Unwalla will be the two competitors on the women’s side, after each received automatic bids at the NCAA Regionals earlier this month. Uhry earned the berth on saber, while Unwalla will be in action on foil.
