PHILADELPHIA – After beginning the season last weekend at Ohio State, the University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s fencing teams will partake in only one other event until the New Year. The Quakers will travel out to State College for the 42nd annual Garret Penn State Open held on Saturday and Sunday Nov. 22-23 in the White Building. Action for both days is set to begin at 8 a.m.
This weekend’s event will showcase fencers from 12 institutions, including Ivy rivals Brown, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton along with University of North Carolina, Johns Hopkins, Temple, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Long Island University, CCNY, and host Penn State.
At the OSU Invitational, the women claimed wins over UNC, OSU, and Princeton, going 3-1 on the day; the men fell in rounds four and five with 13-14 losses to the Buckeyes and Tigers and finished 1-3.
Once the team duals were completed, the top eight fencers – the best eight records in each gender and weapon – contended in a Table of Eight for 15 touches. Penn was represented in the tables by 10 Quakers with five finishing within the top four: freshman Stephanie Wolf (3T Epee), junior RJ Shipp (2 Epee), sophomore Isaac Buchwald (3T Sabre), senior Jason Chang (3T Foil), and freshman John Vaiani (3T Foil).
Results from this weekend can be here found on PennAthletics.com at the conclusion of each day.
