PHILADELPHIA -- This weekend will mark the end of the regular season for the University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s fencing teams, as the Quakers first compete at the Temple Invitational on Saturday in McGonigle Hall. The Red and Blue will fence against Penn State, St. John’s, Brown, and Princeton, starting with PSU at 9 a.m.
The Quakers will then need to keep the momentum going, as they wrap up their slate at the 2015 United States Fencing Collegiate Squad Championships (USCSC) on Sunday, hosted by Drew University in the Simon Forum. Including Penn and Drew, a total of ten teams will compete in the event. Sunday marks the fifth year of the USCSC and action is set to begin at 9 a.m.
Rather than the typical protocol of regular NCAA fencing competitions, the USCSC will feature a relay-scoring structure to 45 points. A champion will be crowned for each of the three weapons (men and women), as well as the overall men and women champion. The squads that win the title with take home the U.S. Collegiate Squad Championship trophy.
This weekend last year also began with the Temple Invitational on Saturday followed by the USCSC on Sunday. However, the women’s squad only competed at the USCSC while the men competed at both events. Out of the three teams the men fenced, Princeton was the only team they beat, but they excelled at the USCSC and captured first place. The women took second behind the Tigers.
Recaps and results will be posted on PennAthletics.com at the end of each day.
