Ferguson Earns Ivy League Weekly Honor

PHILADELPHIA --Senior goalkeeper Lucy Ferguson was instrumental in Penn's 10-9 win over Cornell on Sunday, making eight saves as the Quakers held on to second place in the Ivy League.

For her efforts, Ferguson was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and seventh time in her career.

Ferguson's seven Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week awards are the most by a Penn player and the fourth-most in League history. What makes her seven weekly awards even more noteworthy is the fact that she has earned them in just three seasons while the three players ahead of her did so in four.

Ferguson made five of her eight saves in the second half on Sunday, and kept Cornell off-kilter on free positions as the Big Red were just 1-for-4 from the eight-meter arc. With under two minutes to go, Ferguson made her final save -- just getting her left leg on a Big Red shot before it would have snuck inside the left post to tie the game. Ferguson also came up with one caused turnover and two ground balls.

Ferguson's Defensive Player of the Week award is the ninth weekly award for the Quakers this season, and the sixth time in 10 voting cycles that a Penn defefender has earned the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Week honor.

The six Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week awards won by Penn this year are the most by a school in a single season, eclipsing the old mark of five which had been reached on four occassions -- including twice by Penn in 2007 and 2014.

Ferguson and the Quakers move on to the postseason this week, earning the No. 2 seed in the Ivy League Tournament which begins May 1 at Princeton. Penn will take on Cornell in the day's first semifinal at 4 p.m. live on the American Sports Network and the Ivy League Digital Network.

The two-time defending champions of the Ivy League Tournament, Penn is the only Ivy program to reach all six Ivy League Tournaments.
