PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey program released its 2015 schedule that features eight home games, four versus Ivy League opponents, along with eight road games this fall.
Sixth-year Head Coach Colleen Fink announced the schedule saying, “Each year we have continued to grow our schedule, face new opponents and become increasingly competitive. We are up against several ranked opponents from the 2014 season and hope we continue to grow as a potential national contender.”
Penn’s 2015 schedule features five teams that finished inside the top 25 of the final rankings last season – Temple, Princeton, Bucknell, Liberty, Columbia – andfour more teams that finished inside the top 40 – Cornell, Drexel, Lafayette, and Harvard.
The Quakers will take on Shippensburg in a scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 29 before opening up the regular season.
Penn will begin its regular season on the road in the state of Virginia for two matches, first on Sept. 4 at Liberty, before traveling to Longwood on Sept. 6.
“Opening on the road in Virginia will be a great bonding experience” said Fink. “It will test us early facing Liberty, a successful NCAA tournament team from 2014.”
After the trip to Virginia, Penn will return to Philadelphia to open up its home schedule against neighboring teams.
“We are extremely excited to face many of the city rivals this season adding Saint Joseph’s, Drexel, Temple, and Villanova back onto the schedule,” said Fink.
The Quakers will host Saint Joseph’s in their home opener at Ellen Vagelos Field on Sept. 11. Penn will then play at Temple on Sept. 13, before hosting Villanova on Sept. 16.
Following the three games against Philadelphia rivals, Penn will play Sacred Heart at home on Sept. 20 before opening league play.
The Quakers will begin their Ivy League schedule at home, facing Cornell on Sept. 26 before traveling to face Harvard a week later on Oct. 3.
Penn will play Lafayette at home on Oct. 6, before hosting Ivy foe Dartmouth on Oct. 10. The team will then go on the road for its next three matches.
Coinciding with its game at Columbia on Oct. 16, Penn is planning onhosting an alumnae event in New York City for Quakers past and present.Further details will be announced at a later date.
Continuing its stretch of road games, Penn will play at Bucknell on Oct. 18, and at Drexel on Oct. 21.
Pennpicks back up with theIvy schedule at home versus Yale on Oct. 24, before their final road game at Brown on Oct. 31.
Penn will end the season against Ivy rival Princeton at home on Nov.7 part of Homecoming weekend.
Penn finished 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the Ivy League in 2014, and are returning the Ivy League leading scorer and Rookie of the Year Alexa Hoover, along with six other letterwinners.
