Field Hockey Announces Class of 2019

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey program is pleased to welcome six freshmen to campus this coming fall, making up the Class of 2019. The six players are – Selena Garzio, Reina Kern, Paige Meily, Rachel Mirkin, Sofia Palacios, and Karen Seid.

“We are thrilled to welcome six high-achieving, talented, and passionate athletes to our Penn Field Hockey family,” said Head Coach Colleen Fink.

“We knew how important this class was for the continued success of this program. We feel confident this group of young women brings the competitiveness and grit that is necessary to be part of an Ivy League Championship caliber team. “

The six incoming players hail from five different states - Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The newcomers will join a team that has 21 wins in the last two years, and an 8-9 overall record and 3-4 Ivy League record a season ago.

Selena Garzio
Hometown: Hazelton, Pa.

Coach Fink on Selena: “Selena is an impact type of player. She has great deception, vision and game sense. She will provide a strong foundation in the backfield for the team and act as an anchor for a youthful team. Selena’s agility, speed and footwork are rare to find in an athlete with her size and reach. Her high level playing experience will allow her to be prepared coming into an established program with a competitive schedule and far reaching goals.”

Reina Kern
Hometown: Princeton, N.J.
High School: The Hun School of Princeton

Reina has great size, speed, and passion for the game. At Hun she started for four years and faced record breaking shots and plays at a very high level club program. We suspect Reina to be very successful at Penn.”

Paige Meily
Hometown: State College, Pa.
High School: State College Area H.S.

Coach Fink on Paige: “Paige's quiet confidence and relaxed nature make her a very even keeled athlete and allows her to perform in high pressure situations while minimizing mistakes. Paige relies on her fundamentals and understanding of the team to fit into a team system.”

Rachel Mirkin
Hometown: Winnetka, Ill.
High School: New Trier H.S.

Lettered two years in field hockey, and also played soccer and competed in track & field … Served as team captain her senior season in field hockey … Helped New Trier win the 2014 state championship and led the team to a 25-2-1 overall record … Led team to the 2014 Gateway Classic Championship … In 2013, helped lead New Trier to a state championship runner-up finish … Named to the Illinois High School Field Hockey Association All-State team (2014) … Named New Trier field hockey team MVP (2014) … Finished as the top scorer on her team in 2014 (31 goals, 19 assists) … Named Illinois High School Athletic Association All-Academic … Recognized as a Central Suburban League Scholar Athlete … Named a 2015-16 Illinois State Scholar.

Sofia Palacios
Hometown: Herndon, Va.
High School: Herndon H.S.

Coach Fink on Sofia: “Sofia will bring great speed and athleticism to our program. She is versatile in her skill set, but will be looked upon to contribute on the front line. Sofia has grown tremendously as a player and had a break out senior year.”

Karen Seid
Hometown: Mamaroneck, N.Y.
High School: Mamaroneck H.S.
