PHILADELPHIA - The Penn field hockey team lost their home opener to Philadelphia City Six opponent Saint Joseph’s, 2-0. With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-0 so far this season, while the Quakers fell to 0-3.
The first goal of the game was scored after nine and a half minutes of play, when Saint Joseph’s forward Lauren Luft passed it across the goal to Theresa Barbati, who slipped it in past Penn goalkeeper Liz Schlossberg.
Two more Hawks connected with nine minutes left in the half to put their team up 2-0. Karen Wiley passed it to Nicole Antonini, whose quick stick movements beat her defender, and allowed her to get the shot off past Schlossberg’s right pad into the far corner.
Despite five shots on goal for Penn from Margaretha Ehret, Melissa Black and Rachel Eng, and several promising attempts, the Quakers could not rally to score in the second half.
Schlossberg made three saves in 70 minutes of play, while Saint Joseph’s goalie Rebecca Cunfer had four saves to earn the shutout victory.
Up next, the Quakers will try to bounce back from their third straight loss as they host Ivy rival Harvard Saturday in their first Ivy League match-up of the year.
