Philadelphia - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team earned their third shutout of the season, blanking Drexel, 1-0, on Franklin Field on Wednesday night.
Junior Cara Calahan, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, scored the only goal of the game on a feed from senior Liz Lorelli with 22:14 remaining in the first half. Calahan’s goal was a team-leading fifth on the season. The Quakers’ (7-4) defense held the Dragons (3-8) to just one shot in the contest in their second-straight win and sixth in seven tries. Strong performances by seniors Kate Murphy and Bernice Ravache, junior Kelly McFadden and freshman Melissa Black helped preserve the win, while solid play from juniors Lea Salese and Kristen Gray in the middle field provided the Quakers with opportunities to score.
The Red and Blue out shot the Dragons, 6-1 and held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore goalie Elizabeth Schlossberg walked away with her fourth careershutout in the win. Katie Dougherty made five saves for the Dragons.
The Quakers continue their homestand on Oct. 13 when cross-town rivals Temple travel to Franklin Field for a 7 p.m. showdown.
