NEWARK, Del. - The Penn field hockey team gave it a gallant effort Friday night, but could not make up a two-goal deficit and fell at Delaware, 2-1.
Annie Matthews had the Quakers' goal, an unassisted effort with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest. Her shot from the top of the circle beat Delaware goalkeeper Noelle Diana to the lower right side.
However, it was not enough in a game that came right down to the final seconds. In the final two minutes Penn got a shot from Sunny Stirewalt that Diana saved, and then off a penalty corner Julie Tahan had an effort that was wide.
Delaware (7-7) got on the board in the final minute of the first half, when Carli Shutter sent a pass to Amanda McCardell who re-directed the ball inside the post. The Blue Hens doubled their lead about 13 minutes into the second half when Melissa LeNoir started on a run from about 25 yards out, entered the circle and knocked home a backhanded effort from eight yards.
Penn (1-11) was outshot on the night, 22-8, but Danielle Rothman had a nice game with seven saves in the Quaker goal. At the other end, Diana made four stops. Stirewalt finished the game with three shots to lead the Red and Blue, while Kirstin Snyder and Tahan had two apiece.
