VILLANOVA, Pa. – After a 2-1 victory on Saturday at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania found two goals to be enough once more, as the Quakers defeated Villanova 2-1 on Tuesday evening.
Coming from behind for the victory Saturday, Penn (7-7) took the lead in the first half on Tuesday behind a goal from freshman Alexa Hoover.
The goal for Hoover was her 13th of the season, leading the team and putting her in a tie for first place in the Ivy League in scoring. Hoover is averaging almost a goalper game on the season (0.93), good enough for 11th in the country.
The Quakers outshot Villanova 14-3 in the first half, and led 1-0 at the break.
Shortly into the second half Villanova (4-12) tied the game on a shot from the top of the circle by sophomore Kristen Mercile.
Junior Elizabeth Hitti scored Penn’s second goal 15 minutes into the second period, and as it did on Saturday against Yale, the Quakers defense was able to keep the Wildcats at bay to seal the victory.
Senior Alex Iqbal recorded an assist on each Penn goal, pushing her season total to seven. Iqbal is now second on the team in assists, onebehind Hittiwho haseight.
Penn goalkeeper Allison Weisenfels recorded four saves on Tuesday, giving her 67 on the year.
The Quakers return to action on Saturday against Ivy League foe Brown at home. Penn will celebrate Senior Day before the game, honoring the six seniors on the team. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
