ITHACA, N.Y. – Playing in its Ivy League opener Saturday afternoon, the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team was edged, 1-0, by Cornell at Marsha Dodson Field.
A matchup that saw seven goals scored between the two teams a season ago, this year’s contest was a defensive battle that saw Penn (2-3, 0-1 Ivy) register just one shot on goal while Cornell (4-1, 1-0 Ivy) registered eight.
Despite recording seven more shots on goal, Cornell was held at bay by the Quakers' senior goalkeeper, Allison Weisenfels, who recorded five saves while sophomore defender Claire Kneizys made two defensive saves.
The deciding goal came just over a minute and a half into the second half, when Cornell’s leading scorer Marisa Siergiej scored her eighth goal of the season getting a direct shot on goal off a set corner play.
Senior Alex Iqbal and sophomore Elise Tilton each had two shots for Penn, with Tiltonrecording the Quakers' only shot on goal.
Penn will return to action on Wednesday evening, traveling to face Lafayette at 6 p.m.
